Lutheran Podcasts
Podcasts can be a great way to listen to new ideas throughout the week. If you are unfamiliar, a podcast is like talk radio. A host or a group of hosts will talk to each other or interview people with interesting ideas. They are great to listen to on long drives or while doing yard work or dishes. Like any form of media the quality of podcasts varies widely. Some are poorly produced, uninteresting, or even dealing with profane or inappropriate subjects. However, some are genuinely good and a pleasure to listen to.
There are many Lutheran podcasts that can help you learn more and get deeper into our theology. I have chosen a few here that I can recommend.
Issues, etc.
Hosts interview LCMS pastors, seminary professors, and various experts of interest. “Expert Guests, Expansive Topics, Extolling Christ.”
The Word of the Lord Endures Forever
“Study the Bible with the Church, Past and Present. The Word of the Lord Endures Forever is a new podcast from the producers of Issues, Etc. This is a daily, verse-by-verse Bible Study hosted by Pastor Will Weedon.”
The Lutheran Hour
“The Lutheran hour was first broadcast Oct. 2, 1930 and continues to air today, making it the world’s oldest continually broadcast Christ-centered radio program.”
On the Line
“OTL is the Lutheran, Long-Form podcast that engages Theology and Culture.” KFUO Radio produces several podcasts, a few of which I have included below:
The Lutheran Ladies’ Lounge
o “Join Sarah, Erin, Rachel, and Bri on the sofa in the Lutheran Ladies Lounge, a podcast oasis for you, dear sisters, to sit, rest your feet, and stay a while.”
Concord Matters
o “Study the Lutheran Confessions of Faith found in the Book of Concord with lively discussions led by host Rev. Brady Finnern, President of the LCMS Minnesota North District, and guest LCMS pastors. Join us as these Christ-confessing Concordians read through and discuss our Lutheran doctrine in the Book of Concord in order to gain a deeper understanding of our Lutheran faith and practical application for our vocations.”
Sharper Iron from KFUO Radio
o “Sharper Iron, hosted by Rev. Timothy Appel, looks at the text of Holy Scripture both in its broad context and its narrow detail, all for the sake of proclaiming Christ crucified and risen for sinners. Two pastors engage with God’s Word to sharpen not only their own faith and knowledge, but the faith and knowledge of all who listen.”
Podcasts can be a great way to deepen your appreciation for Scripture and our Lutheran heritage. You can listen by yourself while working or on a long drive or listen and discuss with others. Of course, they cannot act as a substitute for coming to church and Bible study, but as a way to learn throughout the week they are hard to beat.
